The Quire presents “Bayard Rustin: The Man Behind the Dream” during Black History Month.

Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) was key strategist of the American Civil Rights
Movement. Rustin organized the famous 1963 March on Washington. As a non-violent protest, the event had a major influence on the tactics and strategy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

To celebrate Rustin’s life and accomplishments, The Quire of Eastern Iowa along with guest performer Bruce Teague, will be performing “Bayard Rustin: The Man Behind the Dream” on February 21 at First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City at 8:00 PM and again on Februrary 29 at People’s Church in Cedar Rapids. Commissioned by The Quire and others, the piece was composed by Steven Malloy and tells the story of Rustin’s role in the Civil Rights Movement as well as his influence on Dr. King.

“As an LGBTQ+ focused organization, it was deeply moving to be a part of bringing this work to life,” said Nolan Petersen, current Chair for The Quire’s Board of Directors. “After performing the work in 2018, and with an opportunity to revisit the work at the 2020 GALA Festival in Minneapolis in July, the group saw an opportunity to share the story of this incredible figure with our community once again.”
